As I sat on the tour bus and watched nervously as our driver negotiated tight turns down a narrow, one-lane road, enroute to Connemara on the gorgeous West Coast of Ireland. As we headed out from one of our first stops of the day the bus driver mentions the possibility of rain but quickly adds,well just take it as it comes in his thick Irish brogue. Even though he was only referring to the weather, it felt to me like so much more. It was one of those oft-used phrases that seemed to have weight to it despite its simplicity. Maybe because they were the words I needed to hear at that moment; a message somehow specifically meant for me. I adopted it as my motto for the rest of my trip across Ireland, and even back home here in the states those words still resonate in my mind. The truth is that Ive been having a really hard time getting back to reality. My dad passed away unexpectedly a month before my trip, and only a few months before he was set to retire. This is a fact of life we all must deal with, but for me it comes at the end of a long list of sad circumstances my family has had to endure recently. I didnt have much time before the trip to really process everythingthe fact that I lost my dad so soonand now that Im back, the realization of that immutable fact is really hitting me. Knowing that I am not ever going to be coming back to that same person I was just a few months ago is what seems to be affecting me. As much as I want to do all the creative things I was doing before, my heart is in a different place. I will adjust and adapt to this different person in her different world, though. And I know that it is okay To take your time to do whatever it is you want to do after a major life shift To focus on those things that really do need your full-time attention To not be able to hold it all together sometimes To rely on others To let go of things To be grateful for the super tiny little things To have a bad day To be uncomfortable in the new present And most of all to remember to take it as it comes, dont get too far ahead of yourself because what is right here and now is really all that matters.
